District Awarded $1 Million Grant for Middle School Math

This post was created on 08/29/2019.

ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ is one of 12 school districts in the nation selected to receive a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grant as part of the Professional Learning Partnerships Initiative.

The district will use the $1 million grant in partnership with TNTP to prepare teachers for a new middle school math curriculum, Illustrative Math (Open Up Resources).  TNTP and the district will provide teachers with high-quality professional learning to ensure that instruction is meeting the needs of all students.

“We are grateful and honored to be selected by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for this opportunity,” said Kurt Browning, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ County Superintendent of Schools.  “ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ is committed to providing teachers with supports to deliver top-notch, standards-aligned instruction, using high-quality instructional materials so that they can prepare all students for success in college, career, and life,” he added.

The district has worked with TNTP on a variety of initiatives to improve instruction since 2014.  The initial partnership highlighted that most teachers were not fully teaching Florida Standards.  Since that 2014 report, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ has made significant efforts to provide teachers with resources to help them understand the standards and deliver standards-aligned instruction.  The work will continue with this grant and the Professional Learning Partnerships Initiative.
